Masters of the Simple, based in Peoria, Illinois, is dedicated to shaping brighter futures for young people by blending mentorship, education, and community care. We believe every child deserves to feel supported, valued, and equipped for success. Through transformative mentoring relationships, Social-Emotional Learning programs, and basketball camps that build teamwork and confidence, we help youth discover their purpose and strengthen their sense of belonging. Beyond programming, we meet practical needs by providing essentials like school supplies, ensuring students have the tools to thrive in and out of the classroom. Our mission is simple yet powerful: to break down life’s challenges and uplift our community, one connection, one opportunity, and one child at a time.
On August 16, the love of basketball meets the power of hope in our community—all thanks to Jonathan, the founder of Masters of the Simple.
Jonathan’s story begins in an unlikely place: learning the game of basketball from his incarcerated mother. In those moments, the sport became more than just a game. It was a lifeline, a way to connect, to focus, and to believe that life could be more than its hardest chapters.
Now, years later, Jonathan is using that same love of basketball to inspire others. His message is simple but powerful: No matter the life you were born into, it doesn’t have to define your future. With focus, discipline, and heart, you can rise above your circumstances.
Saturday, August 16 marks the 5th Annual FREE Basketball Clinic, hosted by Masters of the Simple. Open to kids and teens ages 8-17 of all skill levels, the event offers not just basketball skills, but also lessons in teamwork, perseverance, and building a better future.
Jonathan believes that if you master the simple, you can tackle the big. And with this event, he’s inviting our community to see that truth in action.
Bring your game and see who can play in Peoria this summer at the Masters of the Simple basketball event, hosted in partnership with the P.U.R.E. Plan and the Nannie M. Johnson Community Center. This youth basketball experience is designed for ages 8 to 14 and focuses on building skills, confidence and teamwork in a fun and competitive environment.
Participants will take part in basketball skills training, drills and live scrimmages led by experienced coaches in a positive community setting. Whether your child is just learning the game or already has experience on the court, this event is built to help young athletes grow and compete.
